Subspecialty Needs – Expanding Knowledge and Skills

Last week, HVO announced two new projects in internal medicine and pediatrics in partnership with Kabale University School of Medicine (KABSOM).

Along with providing support for the general pediatrics and internal medicine training provided to students, interns and residents at KABSOM, HVO volunteers will also support subspecialty training for staff and faculty. The goal of the internal medicine project is to improve the knowledge and skills of internal medicine personnel, focusing on cardiology, non-communicable diseases and other areas as identified by KABSOM. The pediatrics project will work with pediatric personnel in the areas of neurology, nephrology, oncology, cardiology, and neonatology.

KABSOM is not the only one of HVO’s collaborating institutions that is seeking to expand subspecialty knowledge and skills. As needs and skills at our project sites evolve, so too must the scope of our projects. While we continue to recruit pediatric and internal medicine educators and generalists, several sites also seek subspecialists to advance the provision of specialized care.

In pediatrics, we are seeking subspecialists in:

  • cardiology,
  • endocrinology,
  • neurology,
  • infectious disease,
  • intensive care,
  • neonatology, and
  • nephrology, in additional to other subspecialty needs identified by project sites.

In internal medicine, we are seeking subspecialists in:

  • nephrology,
  • gastroenterology,
  • neurology,
  • cardiology,
  • endocrinology,
  • pulmonology,
  • infectious disease,
  • rheumatology,
  • radiology, and
  • critical care, in additional to other subspecialty needs identified by project sites.

For more information on the sites seeking subspecialists, you can view the detailed program pages for internal medicine and pediatrics, or contact Volunteer Placement Coordinator Luc Polglaze.

The American Academy of Pediatrics supports HVO’s pediatric program, and our program in internal medicine is supported by the American College of Physicians.  Our sponsors and overseas partners like KABSOM are essential to achieving our vision for a world where all people have access to high quality health care delivered by local health professionals.
