Volunteers provide continuing education to the current anesthesia providers (anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists) through lectures, presentations, and hands-on instruction. All areas of anesthesia training are needed. The continuing education focuses on the clinical application of concepts and the preparation of the anesthesia providers to become educators so they can teach in the student nurse anesthesia program. This includes providing presentations to the anesthesia department on clinical teaching, precepting, presentation development, exam construction, and evaluation.

Kumasi

Working with KATH faculty, HVO volunteers will increase the number and quality of trained anesthesia residents, nurse anesthetist staff, nurse anesthetist students, medical students and House Officers in Ghana by augmenting teaching and training for students and staff. HVO volunteers will collaborate and mentor faculty and student research projects. They will also work with local staff to improve operating room efficiency, utilization, patient safety and outcomes, and assist in the acquisition of anesthesia teaching and training materials.

Hue

HVO volunteers will provide clinical teaching to student nurse anesthetists and/or provide clinical and didactic training to level one anesthesia residents. Volunteers may also assist with curriculum development for the nurse anesthesia and level one anesthesia resident training programs, and support the academic advancement of both level one anesthesia residents and student anesthesia nurses. In addition, volunteers may assist in the planning and execution of Saturday continuing education courses for anesthesia residents and anesthesiologists from HUMP and the district hospitals. There will be two to four courses offered each year. Volunteers may also assist in the planning and execution of similar courses at a level appropriate for nurse anesthetists.

Volunteers provide teaching and training to participants in the Anesthesia Clinical Officer (ACO) program and ACO graduates. HVO volunteers will assist in the implementation of CMHS’s Bachelor’s of Nurse Anesthesia program and to provide clinical and didactic instruction to the school’s nurse anesthesia students. In addition, volunteers will provide continuing education to practicing nurse anesthetists to supplement the on-the-job training these nurses receive. Volunteers may also assist with master’s training and short professional development courses.

This project seeks to upgrade the skills of anesthesia providers. Volunteers will conduct clinical demonstration in the OR, similar to residency training in the US. Often, anesthesiologists at the hospital will ask the volunteers’ advice or ideas for their required research project. Volunteers might suggest that the anesthesiologists develop projects that include quality assurance or other topics that can help the hospital track progress, trends, and data.

Thimphu

This program works to advance the practice of emergency care provided through education and systems improvement. Volunteers assist in developing an emergency medicine clinical curriculum that can be used for all levels of providers. This curriculum will be used by volunteers as a guide for educational sessions including lectures, hands-on training and informal bedside teaching. Volunteers also work to develop practice guidelines and systems improvement initiatives in selected clinical focus areas. Volunteers play a vital role in establishing a culture of emergency medicine as its own specialty in Bhutan.

Volunteers with expertise in clinical laboratory hematology assist in optimizing the functioning of the laboratory through a systems-based approach. Raxaul

Volunteers provide wound care training to physicians, nurses, and other relevant staff at Duncan Hospital through an interdisciplinary training model. Training and education will be provided through a variety of means including lecture, hands on demonstrations, case studies, and participation in ground rounds with both physicians and nurses.

Physicians, podiatrists, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, and researchers (active or retired) specialized in wound care & lymphedema management

Siem Reap

Volunteers train physicians and nurses to improve the quality of care provided, as well as increase their ability to offer wound & lymphedema care training to local facilities. Patient and family education in wound management is also a priority of AHC. Volunteers participate in protocol development and implementation, teaching modules, and leading workshops for hospital staff and for family home care. Training will occur in clinical and classroom settings.
