Health Volunteers Overseas is proud to welcome the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists as a sponsor of our Obstetrics & Gynecology (Ob-Gyn) program.
There are multiple steps to the placement process and often more than one approval is required. The process varies slightly from country-to-country and project-to-project. We strive to make this process as quick as possible but potential volunteers should be aware that final approval can take several months.
Kampot, Cambodia – Sonja Kill Memorial Hospital (SKMH)
Volunteers will provide formal lectures and informal continuing education in obstetrics and gynecology to staff, students, and residents at SKMH. Midwives may also participate in training. Volunteers will provide clinical and didactic training, case discussions, computer-based learning, and simulations.
Teaching Topics: Obstetrics & gynecology – all topics; ultrasound, fetal monitoring, and obstetric emergencies of particular interest

Qualifications: Volunteers must be qualified, licensed obstetricians/gynecologists.

Deschapelles, Haiti – Hôpital Albert Schweitzer (HAS)
Please note: HVO is not currently placing volunteers at this project.
Volunteers will work with staff at HAS to improve surgical and clinical skills and increase knowledge of ob-gyn clinicians in vaginal surgery among ob-gyn faculty. Volunteers will also work with HAS staff to improve communication between ob-gyn clinicians and pediatricians at the time of delivery and to advance implementation of cesareans.
Teaching Topics: Obstetrics & gynecology – all topics; vaginal surgery, fetal monitoring, ultrasound, laparoscopy, vesicovaginal fistula repair, and cesareans of particular interest
Opportunities for Those-in-Training: No.
Qualifications: Board certified/eligible generalist obstetricians/gynecologists with a current US license and a minimum of 4 years experience. Academic experience is helpful, but not required.

Bhaktapur, Nepal – Bhaktapur Cancer Hospital (BCH)
HVO volunteers will contribute to the development and implementation of a structured surgical gynecologic oncology training program at BCH. Volunteers will work with BCH staff to develop a gynecologic oncology curriculum for both didactic and clinical skills and provide surgical and didactic training to BCH gynecologic oncologists.

Qualifications: Board-certified gynecologic oncologists with at least two years of post-fellowship experience.

Kabale, Uganda – Kabale University School of Medicine (KABSOM)
Working with the academic staff of KABSOM, HVO volunteers will support the training of medical students and residents in ob-gyn. Volunteers will work with obstetrics, pediatrics, nursing, and midwifery staff to improve skills and knowledge in neonatal and pediatric resuscitation, postpartum hemorrhage, eclampsia, and other topics identified by the site.
Teaching Topics: Obstetrics & gynecology – all topics; ultrasound, operative vaginal delivery, hysteroscopy, laparoscopy, neonatal and pediatric resuscitation, postpartum hemorrhage, and eclampsia of particular interest
Opportunities for Those-in-Training: Final year residents accepted if accompanied by a faculty member.
Qualifications: Board eligible/certified (active or retired) physician in the areas of general obstetrics and gynecology, urogynecology, oncology or maternal-fetal medicine.

Kampala, Uganda – Makerere University & Mulago Hospital
This project aims to improve the knowledge and skills of the ob-gyn faculty, clinicians, and trainees at Makerere University and Mulago Hospital. Volunteers at this project site coordinate with the university to provide evidence-based CME lectures and simulation sessions to the clinicians. Volunteers may also participate in clinic rounds and collaborate with clinicians and faculty on obstetrics, acute gynecology, REI, or urogynecology.
Teaching Topics: Obstetrics & gynecology – all topics; obstetrics, acute gynecology, REI or urogynecology of particular interest
Opportunities for Those-in-Training: Final year residents accepted if accompanied by a faculty member.
Qualifications: Board-certified obstetricians/gynecologists with current license. Academic and teaching experience is helpful.

Hue, Vietnam – Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy (HUMP)
This project aims to both improve the knowledge and skills of HUMP ob-gyn staff and specialists and to strengthen ob-gyn postgraduate training at HUMP. This project also focuses on collaborating with ob-gyn staff to conduct scientific research and to provide mentorship in research design, methodology, data analysis, and manuscripts preparation for submission to scientific journals in various areas. Volunteers provide lectures, clinical supervision, and surgical teaching. Volunteers also act as mentors and can assist students with their studies and writing papers.

Opportunities for Those-in-Training: Final year residents accepted if accompanied by a faculty member.
Qualifications: Board-certified obstetricians/gynecologists with current license and at least 10 years of experience preferred, although 5 years or more may be considered. Academic and teaching experience is recommended. Retired volunteers are accepted.
