Flights & Logistics

Volunteers are responsible for making their own travel arrangements and may use any travel agency. However, we recommend Mission Nation Travel, which specializes in travel to developing countries. To book with Mission Nation Travel please contact Kim Corwin (email:; phone: 866-482-8721). Be sure to identify yourself as an HVO volunteer!

Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)

The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program is a free service to allow U.S. citizens and nationals traveling abroad to enroll their trip with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Visit the STEP website to learn more and enroll.

Taking Care of Your Health

As you prepare to travel overseas to improve global health, it’s important to consider your own health.  Here are some helpful resources:

HVO recommends all volunteers to consider purchasing medical evacuation insurance. You can register on-line with:

Department of State Travel Resources

The US State Department is a great resource for traveling abroad. They provide a wealth of information including general travel tips and country-specific insights. Be sure to review these resources as you prepare for your trip:

Passport: Be sure that your passport is current and be aware that some countries require visitors to have a passport that is valid six months after they have left the country. Make sure that you have enough pages in your passport for the visa(s). It is also a good idea to take a copy of the face sheet of your passport with you (but keep it in a different place than your passport). For additional information, visit the United States Department of State (Passport Services) website.

Other Country Background Resources

HVO also includes general country information, global health resources and site-specific information on the HVO KnowNET, our members-only resource for choosing and preparing for a volunteer assignment with HVO.
