Health Volunteers Overseas improves the availability and quality of health care through the education, training, and professional development of the health workforce in resource-challenged countries.
Vision
HVO envisions a world where all people have access to high quality health care delivered by local health professionals.
Letter from the Executive Director and Board Chair
Dear HVO Community,
2023 marked a year of big change with new leadership and more than double the number of volunteers traveling abroad compared to 2022. 171 volunteers journeyed to 16 countries on 185 assignments while virtual programming continued to thrive alongside with 99 virtual volunteers. While numbers are good to have, what we have found truly inspiring are the relationships we have watched form and grow as our volunteers and partners abroad have worked tirelessly together to move mountains and accomplish incredible things through mutual trust and collaboration. In December, we received a visit from Drs. Yvonne Vaucher and Margaret Nakakeeto as they accepted an award from the American Academy of Pediatrics recognizing their twenty-three year partnership—twenty-three years of innovation, collaboration, and hard work on the ground improving neonatal care for babies, first at Mulago Hospital in Kampala, then in hospitals and health centers around Uganda, and then in other African countries including Ethiopia, Somalia, and Sudan. Their partnership, turned life-long friendship, has saved and transformed the lives of babies and families across the continent, making sweeping changes to neonatal care over decades. The impact they have had together is impossible to quantify – and their relationship is only one of many, many relationships HVO’s community has built over thirty-seven years. At the heart of HVO’s work are the people behind it, not just numbers. We thank each and every one of you for the awe-inspiring work you put into advancing global health and for the care and effort you put into building the relationships and connections that will help us achieve our dream of a world with quality health care for all.
Sincerely,
April Pinner, MSPH, RD Executive Director
Carla Smith, MD, PhD Chair of the Board of Directors
Advancing the Role of the Oncology Nurse in Vietnam
In September, a team of HVO volunteers and colleagues at the National Cancer Hospital in Vietnam collaborated on a two-week training course for oncology nurses. The course took the team months to plan and required a commitment to communication and partnership. Volunteers provided a week of lectures on various agreed upon topics to enhance the oncology nurses’ knowledge followed by a second week of hands-on practice and role play using small group instruction. The students in the course left with new skills, new connections, and new stethoscopes, which were graciously donated by volunteers.
I never imagined that it would turn into this huge program it turned into. A two-week, intensive training with large group discussions, small break-out groups with hands-on activities, bedside teaching. So, it was really an incredible program that we managed to put together.
In 2015, with a generous gift from Mr. Hansjörg Wyss, HVO launched a program designed to develop and support a cadre of future leaders in the health care sector in resource-scarce countries. The Wyss Scholarship for Future Leaders in Global Health allows HVO to support the professional development of local health care professionals at HVO project sites. Dr. Lenny Vasanthan and Dr. Gitanjali Lamichaney were two recipients in 2023, and shared the value of their experiences.
Gitanjali Lamichaney, MD
I am one of the youngest pediatricians in Bhutan. I am very blessed and fortunate to have been awarded the Wyss Scholarship twice now – once to attend the 30th IPA Congress in Gujrat & 60th Pedicon and again for the 61st Pedicon in Kochi, India. The former was my first conference as a pediatric resident, and it was such a beautiful experience. I met so many wonderful and learned pediatricians from all over the world and learned a lot from them. I also did a poster presentation on my thesis and found ways to publish it. Because it was great, I did not want to miss the Pedicon this year, and thanks to the scholarship, I could make it to the academic fiesta yet again at Kochi. This was my first conference as a pediatrician, and it encouraged me to continue learning and to take up a fellowship soon. Both times I was accompanied by Dr. Leila Srour, my mentor from HVO, who has been my support system since my first year in residency, and we made beautiful memories together to last a lifetime. Therefore I am very grateful to Mr. Wyss and HVO for this opportunity, because every time I go to these conferences I fall more in love with pediatrics, and I always have some pearls to carry back home and help my patients.
Lenny Vasanthan, BPT, MPT
The information I learned really helped me to improve our existing set up. We formulated a new assessment form and are able to provide good quality care. I was able to conduct more than twenty workshops in our center and in different states in our country. We even published two research papers and are currently involved in a few research projects that will be completed soon. Also, thanks to networking, I was able to bring in a course coordinator from the University of Tennessee to our center to teach a session for us. Thanks to the scholarship and networking, when the American Physical Therapy Association released their clinical practice guidelines on vestibular rehabilitation, I was able to be a part of the evidence summary team and was acknowledged in the guidelines.
An unexpected experience I had was when the physiotherapist of a celebrity Australian cricketer from NSW contacted me to see if I could go treat him when he was injured during the World Cup in India last year. However, due to unavoidable circumstances, I was unable to go treat him. It is good to know that a person in Australia recognizes a person from a small city called Vellore, India for his skills and experience. One of the important reasons for this recognition is my interactions with international professionals and of course the Wyss Scholarship.
In November, we were privileged to receive a visit from on-site coordinator Robert Sowa, who shared with us some of his thoughts on the impact of our project in Ghana. Since the launch of the project in 2022, Mr. Sowa has worked tirelessly alongside HVO volunteers to organize a thriving virtual lecture series and establish collaboration with HVO’s project site in Rwanda. The lecture series, which began in 2022, continued in 2023 with an additional six sessions on topics ranging from understanding benign paroxysmal positional vertigo to locomotor training for patients with neuromuscular dysfunction.
HVO is making a real impact on the lives of people. Personally, I’ve seen how HVO’s work has changed the lives of people in real time. I appeal to people who support HVO’s work to still continue to support the work, because it’s making a difference in the lives of people in the global south.

Charity Burke, MD
In my conversations with the residents at KCMC, I am blown away by the number of times they referenced discussions or training with Dr. Burke. She has worked through these trying times to continue to provide service and education and is well deserving of this recognition!
– Robert Erdin, MD
John Kanyusik, DDS, MSD
Dr. John is truly a doctor with a golden heart. He is very passionate on teaching, extremely kind to students and junior faculties. He has a unique way of helping students on their mistakes. He truly deserves recognition. We will be very happy to see him with a Golden Apple.
– Dr. Dashrath Kafle
Nancy Kelly, MHS
It would be impossible to quantify the impact of Ms. Kelly’s contribution to HVO. Her work has had a ripple effect, one that extends from all the volunteer assignments, to training of countless medical staff, to all the patients who received better care so they could return to having a healthy and productive life.
– Divya Singh, MD
Mark Koh, MBBS, MRCP
The workshop has been the very first one in Vietnam about neonatal dermatology. There were more than 1000 attendees both in-person and virtually. The lectures are knowledgeable and meaningful to all of us.
– Nguyen Thi Thanh Phuong
Olushola Akinshemoyin Vaughn, MD
The CME course on vulvar skin disorders with Dr. Vaughn has been the very first one in Vietnam about this topic. Thanks to Dr. Vaughn, we improved the quality of diagnosis and care for our patients.
– Nguyen Thi Thanh Phuong
Linda Wolff, MPT
Linda works tirelessly and makes sure that the volunteer program is running smoothly. Even during the pandemic, she kept the program running through online mentors and CME. I feel that there are no words to describe her commitment to this volunteering program to improve and transform the skills of physical therapist and physical therapy assistants in Bhutan.
