2024 Annual Report

Letter from the Executive Director and Board Chair
Dear HVO Community,
With global health facing so many challenges this year, it is a privilege to lead HVO’s continued development and expansion. Through close collaboration with our dedicated partners and volunteers, we are expanding our impact with new projects, workshops, scholarships, and other initiatives that strengthen health systems around the world. In 2024, we opened five new projects and facilitated three dozen scholarships and fellowships, helping to build long-term health care capacity through education and professional development. Volunteers completed over 300 assignments, an increase from 2023, training thousands of health care providers on essential knowledge and transformative procedures.
Behind every project and workshop are relationships—lasting connections that transcend borders and change lives. In Uganda, physicians and nurses are working together to expand access to life-saving neonatal care in rural areas. In Laos, intensive workshops are advancing pediatric anesthesia care, improving safety and outcomes for vulnerable children. In both places, and at all our sites, volunteers return year after year, establishing trust, forming friendships, and continuously expanding the knowledge and skills of local health professionals. Across all HVO programs, our shared vision—quality health care for all—inspires our progress.
The achievements of 2024 reflect the power of partnership, the expertise and generosity of our volunteers, and the unwavering support of our donors and institutional partners. Together, we are building sustainable solutions that will shape the future of global health care.
Thank you for being part of the HVO community. We hope you enjoy this report and celebrate the impact we are making together.

Celebrating Two Decades of Saving Newborn Lives in Uganda
Watch the video to hear Dr. Yvonne Vaucher and Dr. Margaret Nakeeto share their work on neonatal care in Uganda.
In the twenty-three years since Dr. Yvonne Vaucher first traveled to Uganda on an HVO assignment, she and Dr. Margaret Nakakeeto have been revolutionizing neonatal care in hospitals around the country through their collaborative efforts. After receiving training from Dr. Vaucher, Dr. Nakakeeto began training teams of her own, first improving care for babies in her own hospital and then in hospitals in other regions. Last year, the two toured seven hospitals in the West Nile region where Dr. Nakakeeto’s teams have been training local health workers on providing IV fluids, antibiotics, oxygen, continuous positive airway pressure, and on how to create neonatal care units.
A critical issue Dr. Vaucher and Dr. Nakakeeto recognized was a lack of awareness of the need for follow-up with pre-term babies. During their tour, they gave interactive talks in each neonatal care unit.
Dr. Nakakeeto has expanded her training model to other countries in Africa, including Sudan, Somalia, and Ethiopia while Dr. Vaucher returns to HVO’s project in Kampala annually to provide training, mentorship, and support to new generations of neonatal care specialists.
These babies go home and a lot of them die because there is no appropriate follow up or medication. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was 25 or 30 percent. Providers didn’t realize they need to follow up with these babies for longer than a few weeks, but you need to follow up for a year. One approach is to go and teach and leave, but then what? Margaret’s approach is always that you need to mentor. Her teams set up a WhatsApp group for the district so they can talk to one another. Then the teams go back and mentor local providers for at least six months and are always available for consultation and questions.
I was there when Margaret was first assigned as the director of the neonatal care unit. She had no experience, and it wasn’t what she expected to do. I mentored her the first seven years, but now she mentors me. All this has grown out of HVO.
– Dr. Yvonne Vaucher

Advancing Anesthesia Care in Laos
Dr. Richard Henker has been visiting Lao Friends Hospital for Children (LFHC) since 2015, often accompanied by nurse anesthesia students from the University of Pittsburgh. During his trip in the summer 2024, he collaborated with local partners to conduct a successful workshop focused on regional anesthesia for eleven Lao anesthesiology residents. Two of the HVO-trained instructors, Kuelee Lao and Peng An Im, nurse anesthetists at LFHC and Angkor Hospital for Children and HVO Warfield Scholars, then traveled with Dr. Henker to the AANA conference in San Diego to present their research posters. They then proceeded to the University of Pittsburgh, where Mr. Lao and Mr. Im had the opportunity to observe anesthesia practice in the U.S.
For more information on Dr. Henker’s student programs at LFHC and Angkor Hospital for Children, read the featured article in our Spring 2023 edition of the Volunteer Connection.

Sustainable Change in Orthopaedic Care at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center

Since 2020, Dr. Robert Erdin has been leading team trips and organizing online learning for staff and residents at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center in Moshi, Tanzania as part of HVO’s orthopaedic project. In January 2024, he led his third in-person team on a four-week visit providing hands-on surgical training, lectures, and mentorship. Some of the volunteers had come on previous trips. Dr. Erdin stressed the importance of repeated interactions and building relationships and trust. “This is the best trip we’ve had,” he said, “It gets easier every year as we get to know people and don’t have to start over from scratch… So many volunteers show up one time and never come back, and for a lot of the residents the first visit is almost ignored. But what we are seeing now is that we’re getting trust from staff and residents. Now they seek us out and ask us questions. Building relationships makes everything so much better…if you can establish a relationship, then long-term change can happen.”
One of the residents on the team shared his reflection:
The lasting impact I see is the surgeons who continue to use the skills we taught them and who continue to reach out about tough cases or send us post-op x-rays using techniques we taught them. The ability to continue to teach and see those surgeons do better for their patients is incredibly rewarding. Ideally, one day, there won’t be a knowledge, skills, or resource gap between the US and KCMC, but that will take a great deal of time and even inching closer year by year is a win for both the surgeons and the patients who will benefit.

HVO’s board and staff would like to extend our profound thanks to the members of our community who support our mission in so many ways. We stand in awe of the commitment and contributions made by these individuals, without whom we would not be able to continue our work towards creating a world with quality health care for all.
These volunteers provide the guidance and support essential for the success of HVO programs. These leaders work year-round in many capacities – on Steering Committees providing oversight, guidance to staff, and exploring new project opportunities, and as Project Directors recruiting and preparing volunteers, as well as monitoring and refining the educational goals of individual projects. Special thanks are due to these individuals who provide the framework for the management of HVO’s educational programs.
