Mission

Health Volunteers Overseas improves the availability and quality of health care through the education, training, and professional development of the health workforce in resource-challenged countries.

Vision

HVO envisions a world where all people have access to high quality health care delivered by local health professionals.

Letter from the Executive Director and Board Chair

Dear HVO Community,

With global health facing so many challenges this year, it is a privilege to lead HVO’s continued development and expansion. Through close collaboration with our dedicated partners and volunteers, we are expanding our impact with new projects, workshops, scholarships, and other initiatives that strengthen health systems around the world. In 2024, we opened five new projects and facilitated three dozen scholarships and fellowships, helping to build long-term health care capacity through education and professional development. Volunteers completed over 300 assignments, an increase from 2023, training thousands of health care providers on essential knowledge and transformative procedures.

Behind every project and workshop are relationships—lasting connections that transcend borders and change lives. In Uganda, physicians and nurses are working together to expand access to life-saving neonatal care in rural areas. In Laos, intensive workshops are advancing pediatric anesthesia care, improving safety and outcomes for vulnerable children. In both places, and at all our sites, volunteers return year after year, establishing trust, forming friendships, and continuously expanding the knowledge and skills of local health professionals. Across all HVO programs, our shared vision—quality health care for all—inspires our progress.

The achievements of 2024 reflect the power of partnership, the expertise and generosity of our volunteers, and the unwavering support of our donors and institutional partners. Together, we are building sustainable solutions that will shape the future of global health care.

Thank you for being part of the HVO community. We hope you enjoy this report and celebrate the impact we are making together.

Watch the video to hear Dr. Yvonne Vaucher and Dr. Margaret Nakeeto share their work on neonatal care in Uganda.

These babies go home and a lot of them die because there is no appropriate follow up or medication. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was 25 or 30 percent. Providers didn’t realize they need to follow up with these babies for longer than a few weeks, but you need to follow up for a year. One approach is to go and teach and leave, but then what? Margaret’s approach is always that you need to mentor. Her teams set up a WhatsApp group for the district so they can talk to one another. Then the teams go back and mentor local providers for at least six months and are always available for consultation and questions.

I was there when Margaret was first assigned as the director of the neonatal care unit. She had no experience, and it wasn’t what she expected to do. I mentored her the first seven years, but now she mentors me. All this has grown out of HVO.

HVO Stories

Golden Apple Award

The Golden Apple Award, established by the HVO Board of Directors in 2006, recognizes extraordinary contributions in support of HVO’s mission, organization, and project sites.

2024 GOLDEN APPLE HONOREES

Andrew is a constant source of inspiration and mentorship for his growing faculty and his young and often changing staff. His dedication to learning and to the profession of physical therapy make him worthy of receiving the HVO Golden Apple Award. As a result of this work HVO will be expanding the scope of work in India to include occupational therapy and speech/audiology therapy in addition to physical therapy.

– Dr. Toni Sander

Dr. Martin is the most persistent and an amazing inspiring mentor I have ever met in my life. He always shares practice-changing research and relevant guidelines and is always ready to do case-based learning online. He is a legend who taught the real meaning of humanity to the entire oncology fraternity.

– Dr. Soniya Dulal

Over the past 20+ years , Margaret has made remarkable progress improving neonatal care in Uganda. Her vision, determination, persistence, and faith inspires her team of nurse trainers who teach clinical staff how to improve care of all newborns, whether term or preterm, sick or well, at health centers and hospitals throughout the country.

– Dr. Yvonne Vaucher

His commitment and dedication to this tumor board has a meaningful and lasting positive impact on the clinicians in Nepal and on the patients they care for. Over the last 2.5 years that I have participated in this tumor board, the group of Nepali oncologists and trainees who regularly participate has widened, and now several hospitals are represented. This is a testament to the value of this program.

– Dr. Melanie Thomas

Her unwavering dedication to advancing healthcare in underserved areas, particularly in Vietnam, sets her apart. She not only imparts valuable medical knowledge but also fosters international collaboration by connecting and facilitating further training for US doctors in Vietnamese hospitals. Dr. Smith has laid the foundation for positive change, demonstrating that impactful transformations often begin with modest yet deliberate actions.

– Dr. Giang Pham

We are tremendously honored to recognize the transformational improvement across all of our programs thanks to the generosity of Mr. Hansjorg Wyss. Due to the groundwork his gifts enabled, we faced the challenges of the pandemic and a changing world, emerging ever stronger and more committed to our goals.

– Carla Smith, MD

Our Community

HVO’s board and staff would like to extend our profound thanks to the members of our community who support our mission in so many ways. We stand in awe of the commitment and contributions made by these individuals, without whom we would not be able to continue our work towards creating a world with quality health care for all.

Project Directors & Steering Committee Members

These volunteers provide the guidance and support essential for the success of HVO programs. These leaders work year-round in many capacities – on Steering Committees providing oversight, guidance to staff, and exploring new project opportunities, and as Project Directors recruiting and preparing volunteers, as well as monitoring and refining the educational goals of individual projects. Special thanks are due to these individuals who provide the framework for the management of HVO’s educational programs.
