Improving global health is a mission that calls all to action.
Everyone deserves an equal opportunity for health. Imagine a time when you faced illness or injury. What if there was no hospital or clinic for you to visit – or if lines at the clinic required you to wait days for care? What if there was no health professional for you to talk to about your health? What if you could not receive the health care you needed?
Around the globe, there are at least a billion people who face this horrifying reality each year. They suffer because they cannot access the care they need when they need it most.
But health disparities represent a preventable and solvable global problem, if we all do our part to address shortages of care around the world.
At HVO, we believe people are central to addressing this global challenge, and for nearly thirty years, we have witnessed the power of people talking to people to improve global health. Our volunteers arededicated health care professionals who share their time, talent and knowledge with colleagues overseas. They create curricula and teaching materials, present lectures, provide bedside training, mentor residents and students to improve the quality and availability of care in resource-scarce countries. Their work supports and empowers local health workers, which, in turn, strengthens the health systems where they work.
There is a role for you, too. By supporting HVO, you provide the necessary resources to recruit more volunteers, address more requests for support, and provide more teaching and training opportunities for health care workers in more places around the world.
