Nutrition Volunteer Opportunities

The HVO nutrition team supports us so much. The sessions have increased my confidence in dealing with the everyday challenges of my job. I feel more able to advocate for changes to treatment plans so that children get the nutrition they need.

READY TO VOLUNTEER?

There are multiple steps to the placement process and often more than one approval is required. The process varies slightly from country-to-country and project-to-project. We strive to make this process as quick as possible but potential volunteers should be aware that final approval can take several months.

ACTIVE PROJECTS

Siem Reap, Cambodia– Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC)

Nutrition consultation at Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC) is provided by two registered nurses in the absence of a clinical dietitian, speech therapist with feeding expertise, a gastroenterologist, and an endocrinologist on staff. Since 2021, HVO volunteers have been providing online support for these two nutrition nurses. The team meets twice a month on Zoom for lectures, case presentations, and the promotion of evidence-based practice. The nutrition nurses also use email to detail interim cases that are particularly challenging. The project shifted to a hybrid model in late 2023 to include both online and in-person volunteer opportunities. On-site visits will include a combination of rounds, formal and informal presentations, procedural training, and provider specific consultation when requested. Overall, the project seeks to provide ongoing education for AHC staff, assist with their research proposals, and support the development of clinical protocols.
