HVO is pleased to announce two new opportunities for anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists seeking a global health volunteer experience. Our newest anesthesia training projects—located in Hue, Vietnam and Kigali, Rwanda—are both recruiting CRNAs and MDs with a current license to provide anesthesia to help improve the knowledge and skills of anesthesia providers and help train anesthesia residents and student nurse anesthetists. Final year residents paired with an appropriate preceptor will also be considered for volunteer assignments at these sites.
It is difficult for the few anesthesia clinicians to give adequate attention to the student needs as well as keep up their clinical duties.”
– Lena Dohlman, MD, MPH, Project Director for HVO’s new anesthesia training project in Hue, Vietnam
Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy (HUMP) hospital is responsible for training 15 to 20 nurse anesthesia students, as well as Level 1 anesthesia residents, who rotate through the hospital in groups of 5 to 10 at a time. HVO volunteers will provide clinical and didactic training to both the nurse anesthesia students and the Level 1 anesthesia residents. Volunteers may also assist with curriculum development, and may help to organize Saturday continuing education courses for anesthesia residents and anesthesiologists from HUMP and the district hospitals. Similar courses may also be planned for nurse anesthetists. Volunteer assignments will last from one to four weeks.
The University of Rwanda/College of Medicine and Health Sciences (CMHS) is seeking volunteers to assist in the implementation of the schools new Bachelor’s of Nurse Anesthesia program. Beginning in 2017, volunteers will be recruited for assignments of two to four weeks. Assignments will correspond to anesthesia-specific training modules, and approximately two volunteers will be recruited to assist with each module. Volunteers will also provide continuing education to practicing nurse anesthetists, and may provide training to master’s students or conduct professional development seminars.
HVO’s anesthesia programs are supported by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists and the Society for Education in Anesthesia. Learn more about current anesthesia volunteer opportunities on our anesthesia programs page.
