New Volunteer Opportunity in Orthopaedics: Philippine General Hospital

HVO is thrilled to announce a new volunteer opportunity in orthopaedics at Philippine General Hospital (PGH) in Manila, the Philippines. PGH is seeking volunteers to augment the training of roughly 20 orthopaedic residents completing the hospital’s four-year residency training program. In addition, volunteers will assist with the training of the hospital’s 30 orthopaedic attendings, as well as third and fourth year medical students who regularly rotate through the hospital’s orthopaedic clinics.

Philippine General Hospital is a public hospital that is owned and operated by the University of the Philippines Manila—the University’s Health Sciences Center. PGH was established over 100 years ago, in September of 1910. The residency training program at PGH is recognized by the Philippine Board of Orthopaedics, and is one of 20 such training programs in the country. Residents in the program provide the majority of orthopaedic care at PGH, with the supervision of staff and consultants.

HVO volunteers will engage in informal teaching in the hospital’s clinics and in the OR, as well as provide formal didactic lectures and participate in patient rounds. Volunteers may also hold conferences to introduce new treatments or reinforce current concepts. Volunteers must be licensed, board certified orthopaedic surgeons who are either currently practicing or retired, and will be recruited for assignments of two to four weeks.
