Wyss Scholarship

A critical element of professional development is the nurturing of leadership skills. With a generous gift from Mr. Hansjörg Wyss, HVO launched a program designed to develop and support a cadre of leaders in the health care sector in resource-scarce countries. The Wyss Scholarship for Leaders in Global Health allows HVO to support the professional development of local health care providers at HVO project sites.

To qualify for the Wyss Scholarship:

  • Must work/study at an HVO project site. Candidates may include local faculty, clinicians, and those in post-graduate training programs.
  • Must have demonstrated leadership potential. Candidates should have a strong commitment to their patients and profession and demonstrate a desire to share their knowledge with their colleagues.
  • Must have an identified training opportunity in order to apply.
    • Eligible opportunities for funding include: regional conferences, meetings, and short-term courses; international conferences, meetings, and short-term courses of study; and online short courses. Applicants are encouraged to prioritize regional training opportunities to support networking in the vicinity.
  • Training opportunities to be funded should occur no less than 2 months after the application deadline.
  • No individual may receive more than two Wyss scholarships and prior recipients must wait at least 3 years before applying again.

Submission Process and Deadlines:

Applications are reviewed three times per year. Deadlines are:

  • January 15
  • May 1
  • September 1

Candidates are notified if they were awarded a scholarship within a month following the submission deadline.

All Wyss Scholars recipients are required to submit a report (no longer than 5 pages) within 30 days of completion of their funded course/training which outlines their experience and lessons learned. Any returned Wyss scholar who does not submit a report will not qualify for additional HVO funding.
