Help Train Internal Medicine Residents in Guyana!

HVO is pleased to announced the launch of a new internal medicine training project in collaboration with Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) in Guyana.

GPHC, which is affiliated with the University of Guyana, is the largest hospital in Guyana with a mission to “provide a comprehensive range of quality health care services in an efficient, effective, equitable and caring manner” while also incorporating “teaching and research activities designed to ensure excellence in patient care, education and research.” In pursuit of this mission, the hospital developed and implemented its internal medicine residency-training program in 2013. HVO volunteers will now have the opportunity to support this three-year program by providing clinical supervision, lectures and mentorship to residents and recent graduates.

As of November 2016, two faculty members were responsible for training the ten residents enrolled in the program. HVO volunteers will work with these faculty members to supervise residents during bedside rounds, and deliver lectures in areas of internal medicine or its subspecialties. Volunteers may also have the opportunity to assist with exam and curriculum development. This year, the first cohort of the three-year program will graduate, having earned their Master’s Degrees from the University of Guyana in internal medicine and infectious disease. HVO volunteers will serve as mentors to recent graduates of the residency-training program by helping the graduates develop their teaching and leadership skills.

Board certified internists, internal medicine subspecialists, and individuals in their last year of subspecialty training will be recruited for volunteer assignments of two to four weeks in length. Those interested in volunteering should contact Elysabeth Stuehrmann or visit the HVO website to begin the volunteer placement process. You can also support this project by making a gift to support HVO, or by sharing the news with your network on Facebook and Twitter.

HVO would like to thank the American College of Physicians for supporting this and other internal medicine projects.
