As an organization focused on our global mission, Health Volunteers Overseas doesn’t always have the opportunity to celebrate the community where we have based our operations for nearly 30 years – Washington, D.C.
Fortunately, we will have that opportunity this Thursday, June 2nd when we join United Way of the National Capital Area and Global Impact for a one-day, community-based giving event. Do More 24 is a local movement that brings together nonprofit organizations, companies, and people committed to making a difference. Through focused online giving on June 2, 2016, Do More 24 provides the opportunity for people in the D.C. metro area to give to the causes and organizations closest to their hearts .
We are thrilled to participate in this year’s Do More 24 event. The day offers us the opportunity to celebrate our home of 30 years. In addition, the Do More 24 community-based giving day celebrates the essential role that local giving can have in global causes. Our community of supporters here in D.C. has an important role in the work that we do overseas.
In addition, we are grateful that Do More 24 has invited global organizations like HVO and those of Global Impact’s Charity Alliance to participate. By including global organizations in the day of community-based giving, Do More 24 allows the local community to celebrate and support the global work of our volunteers and acknowledge that our global work matters locally. The availability of quality health care in resource-scarce countries plays an increasingly crucial role in the health security of the U.S. and communities like D.C. As the world and its economies become increasingly globalized, involving extensive international travel and commerce, it is necessary to think about health in a global context.
