HVO Launches New Gynecologic Oncology Project in Nepal

In February 2015, the Kathmandu Post (Nepal’s leading English language newspaper) reported that the number of cancer cases in the country was on the rise, with cervical and ovarian cancers ranking among the five most-common cancers for women. HVO is pleased to announce the launch of a new gynecologic oncology training project in partnership with the Bhaktapur Cancer Hospital (BCH), which will help to address the growing burden of gynecologic cancer in Nepal.

NepalBCH is a national level cancer hospital located in Bhaktapur, Nepal. The hospital was established in April 1999 by the Nepal Cancer Relief Society in collaboration with the government of Nepal, Rotary International and several individuals from the local community. As of late 2015, BCH treats approximately 5,000 patients each year, roughly 80 of whom are gynecologic oncology patients. In addition, the physicians at BCH staff a busy clinic three days each week, where they treat a mix of benign and gynecologic oncology cases. The clinic sees anywhere from 25 to 50 patients each day.

HVO volunteers will provide hands-on surgical training to the gynecologic oncology staff at BCH. Volunteers will also provide training to physicians in the outpatient clinic, and may help to standardize pathways for common disease areas such as lung, breast, colorectal and cervical cancers.

This project will accept volunteers beginning in February 2017. HVO’s obstetrics and gynecology program is supported by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
