SEA-HVO Fellows: A Chance to Teach and to Learn

With the support of individual donors and groups, the Society for Education in Anesthesia (SEA) and HVO offer a number of fellowship opportunities to senior anesthesia residents to teach at HVO’s anesthesia project sites each year.

SEA-HVO FELLOWSHIPS

Applications available on the HVO Fellowship & Funding page; electronic submission due February 3, 2015.

The fellowship affords overseas students of anesthesia the opportunity to learn from well-educated and passionate residents while also offering fellows the opportunity to grow in their field and expand their global health networks.  SEA-HVO fellows often report of professional development overseas, as evidenced by this report from 2014:

I very much treasured my time with the students – so much so that I would like to continue similar efforts in the future. At first, it was somewhat daunting because there were so many new things. I myself had to adapt and learn many new things both in general and about anesthesia. Towards the end of my stay, I realized how far I had come.”

In addition, residents often discover the challenges their colleagues face in resource-scarce environments.  As one SEA-HVO fellow reported from his trip:

“One day I was talking with the students, and I inquired what their daily schedule was like. One told me he woke up around 4 am. He prepared for the day and began studying prior to the morning report at 7:30. After, he attended a lecture, followed by patient care until 3:30 when the afternoon lecture occurred. After the lecture, he ate dinner (around 7pm) and then started seeing patients for the next day – sometimes until 9pm. It became very apparent at this point that they have quite a rigorous schedule. They work difficult hours and have only 18 months to learn everything they need to provide anesthesia. I realized that it must be challenging for them and resolved to try my hardest to efficiently teach them what they need to know to the best of my ability.”

By better understanding the challenges that students of anesthesia face in resource-scarce environments, SEA-HVO fellows come to understand the essential role they can play in improving global anesthesia care.  They hone their skills as mentors and many maintain professional relationships with their students long after they return home and become part of the global anesthesia network.

We are currently accepting applications for the 2015 SEA-HVO fellowship; senior anesthesia residents interested in spending 4 weeks teaching at an HVO anesthesia site in a resource-scarce country are encouraged to apply. Applications are due February 3, 2015.  Learn more by visit HVO’s fellowships and funding page.
