If you are a long-time member of the HVO community, you are likely familiar with our Biennial Photo Contest. Since its inception, this contest has provided an opportunity for volunteers to share a small piece of their overseas experience with us. This year, the contest is also one component of HVO’s 30th anniversary celebration.
As HVO enters its fourth decade of transforming lives through education, we are calling on the HVO community to help us mark the occasion by celebrating the achievements of volunteers, trainees, and partner institutions; collaborating to expand HVO’s work and our global impact; and helping us grow to transform more lives through education and empowerment. These three concepts also comprise the categories of this year’s photo contest.
Entries in the celebration category may include a celebratory moment between health worker and patient as a health milestone is achieved, human expressions of joy in everyday life, or the celebration of local culture expressed through beautiful scenery and local landmarks.
The collaboration category is meant to highlight this essential element of the HVO mission. Our collaborating institutions overseas are what make HVO’s training projects possible, while collaboration between our volunteers and their counterparts in resource-scarce countries facilitates the exchange of knowledge, which leads to improved quality of care. We ask that entries in this category feature human subjects collaborating with one another.
Entries in the growth category may feature human subjects, nature scenes, or both. The reference to growth may be literal, such as the growth of a child, or metaphorical, such as the
personal growth experienced when serving overseas, or learning new information for the first time.
These three new categories are not the only new addition to this year’s photo contest. For the first time ever, we will be accepting video as well as photo submissions.
Entrants are permitted to submit up to three photos per category (maximum file size 5 MB), and one video entry is permitted per person (maximum file size 25MB). All photos and video should come from an HVO project site or country where we work. Videos may bring together photos or footage from multiple HVO project sites, but should maintain a theme related to HVO’s mission. Please be sure your entry is clearly labeled with a title, description, location, and date. Submissions will be accepted now through October 14th. Winners we will be announced in November.
