Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)
The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program is a free service to allow U.S. citizens and nationals traveling abroad to enroll their trip with the nearest US Embassy or Consulate. Visit the STEP website to learn more and enroll.
Taking Care of Your Health
As you prepare to travel overseas to improve global health, it’s important to consider your own health. Here are some helpful resources:
- WHO’s International Travel and Health
- Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Traveler’s Health
- The International Society of Travel Medicine – (Provides information on travel clinics in the US)
All volunteers should obtain medical evacuation insurance for their overseas assignment. Mission Nation Travel offers insurance plans provided by Arch RoamRight.
- The Basic and Deluxe Protection Plans are available to U.S. and non-U.S. residents in-conjunction with airline tickets purchased with MNT Travel. Maximum trip length is 180-days.
- Other options include Allianz or Good Neighbor Insurance.
Department of State Travel Resources
The US State Department is a great resource for traveling abroad. They provide a wealth of information including general travel tips and country-specific insights. Be sure to review these resources as you prepare for your trip:
Passport: Make sure your passport is current, and be aware that some countries require visitors to have a passport that is valid six months after they have left the country. Verify that you have enough pages in your passport for the visa(s). It is also a good idea to take a copy of the face sheet of your passport with you (but keep it in a different place than your passport). For additional information, visit the United States Department of State (Passport Services) website.
Other Country Background Resources
HVO also includes general country information, global health resources, and site-specific information on the HVO MyHVO, our members-only resource for choosing and preparing for a volunteer assignment with HVO.
