We Need Nurses

Nurses make up 60-80% of the global health workforce, delivering as much as 90% of all health care services. They are essential to strong health systems and ensuring access to care around the world. The infographic below shares nursing numbers around the world, along with a brief history of the profession.

Ugandan nurses gathered for a lessonAt Health Volunteers Overseas, nursing education is central to our work to improve the availability of nursing care around the world. These projects plan for the next generation of nursing staff, providing essential information and skills to future nurse educators. The aim is to create a sustainable solution to global nurse shortages, giving local health systems the capacity to teach and train the staff they need.  As one volunteer to HVO nursing education project in Tanzania stated, “I try to empower the nursing staff that they will be role models for their nursing students…”

Our nursing education projects seek experienced nurse educators and nurse practitioners – with master’s or doctoral level credentials – for formal nursing education positions. BS-prepared nurses with several years of relevant clinical experience who are comfortable with formal teaching are also welcome as clinical mentors and teachers.

Areas of experience include, but are not limited to: care of people with diabetes, stroke, end-stage renal nursing with dialysis, mental health and psychiatric nursing, burn care, newborn care, care for children on ventilators, general pediatrics, ICU nursing, medical/surgical nursing, and women’s health.

In addition to nursing education projects, several other specialty projects call for nurse volunteers. Our wound & lymphedema, hematology, and oncology projects also have a need for nurse volunteers with expertise in those areas.
